Overview

I started the Wealth application because I was frustrated using spreadsheets to track my investments over time. I changed investment firms at least a half-dozen times as my career moved along. It was nearly impossible for me to get a picture how my portfolio was changing. I also wanted an independent view from my current investment company. The application as originally named DIY Do it yourself. Here are some key things my site does that yours probably doesn't

  • Compare your actually invested funds vs inflation - I use the Canadian CPI numbers from the Bank of Canada
  • Visually see how removing money from my account (withdraws) affects my ROI (return on investments)
  • Am I beating the standard indices (pending)
  • Will I have enough money to retire? I am retired, so it is a moot point but maybe not for you (pending)

It is time I included this:

It's Only yOur Money, is a website designed to track your day-to-day income/expenses as well as your long term wealth. It is not a site for evaluation of equities, mutual funds, or ETFs. I do not purport to have any knowledge of the markets, I am a software developer not a financial expert. Equity Values are only updated at the end of the day (most days). This site is free, I don't track your whereabouts, I don't sell your data, I don't have any advertisements. If any of these change I will inform you.

Accounts are the basis for all wealth management. They can be an "Investment" account, holding Equities, ETF or Mutual Funds. They can be your "Bank" account or even a "Value" account.

  • Investment Accounts hold Mutual Funds, Equities etc., each thing contained in an investment account will have shares, prices, dividends and whether updated via API (as in the case of Equities/ETFs) or via account uploads or even manually by you.
  • Bank Accounts hold a money balance, No provisions are in place for interest.
  • Value Accounts hold THINGS I can't track. They are also Funded and Redeemed via Transactions but any growth reported as a separate single Value Transaction. They are useful for GIC accounts, Mutual funds that are not well reported.

Portfolios are a mechanism to track accounts that either coexist for the same purpose such as After Tax accounts or historically track to the same ultimate goal, such as your retirement funds that your transfer as you move between different employers.
Managed accounts are accounts where someone is taking care of the reinvestment of dividends.

How to get started

Well that depends... If you already have data in a spreadsheet you can upload it. If you have an trading account with a decent interface you can download transactions as CSV files (Comma Seperated Values). It drives me crazy that my RRSP account does not offer this ability. I use QuestTrade that does, so does my Manulife TFSA accounts.
The crux of the Wealth application is that is only stores Transactions (XAs) against an Account. Transactions, are typically Fund/Withdraw - Buy/Sell. When you visit the application it will dynamically calculate your wealth based on equity prices. I only store one entry per month, which is typically the end of the month.

Upload CSV Files Formats - Default Columns
Date AccountName AccountKey Symbol Region Description XAType Currency Quantity Price Amount
2014-12-01 Dan's Account Foo_007 BCE.TO Canada Bell Canada Inc. Buy CAN 10 50 500
Format must be YYYY-MM-DD Display Name Unique Acct Name Equity with exchange suffix Canada or US Full Name Transaction Type Currency CAD or USD Quantity if applicable Price if applicable Amount if appropriate

Other than the default columns we support native uploads of CSV file export by: QuesTrade, Manulife legacy, and Manulife Wealth. If you have another format you would like supported send along a sample CSV, and I'll do my best to add it.

You can also consider just creating an account, and adding the transactions manually.

Transactions Supported (Default Import)

Transaction Description
Deposit Funds added to the Account
Buy Equities/ETF/Mutual Funds Purchased
Reinvested Dividend Equities/ETF/Mutual Funds - Automatically Reinvested
Sell Equities/ETF/Mutual Funds Sold
Dividends/Interest Funds added to your account - increases the 'CASH' portion of your account
Withdraw Funds removed to your account
Fees Paid Funds removed to your account - to pay for services
Transferred In Funds and/or equities transferred into your account
Transferred Out Funds and/or equities transferred out of your account
Value Special Transaction only applicable to Value accounts. It is value reported on this date
Balance Special Transaction only applicable to Bank accounts. It is balance reported on this date

How do I maintain this once it is going

Well that depends... If you only have investment accounts that contain Equities/ETFs then the data should update all by itself. However, if you are tracking a bank account or Value accounts. you will need to spend some time updating them.

Best Practice
At the end of the month take 30 minutes and update the values. If you have access to transactions. Download them and reimport them. If you don't just update the values at the end of the month.
